How about something exciting, entertaining, educational, and family-oriented? Expect it all at Maxwell Air Force Base’s “Beyond the Horizon” Air and Space Show on 6 and 7 April. The Air and Space Forces Association Chapter 102 (AFA-102) is proud to help support and spread the words about this tremendous River Region Airshow. Why an Airshow? It’s an opportunity for the River Region community to get a “peek behind the gates” and see the great work our nation’s defenders are doing in protecting our freedoms. The Air University and 42 Air Base Wing personnel have been working for over a year to plan and execute this two-day family-oriented event.

The April timing makes for perfect springtime weather (we hope). And after all these winter rains, a spring family outing is certainly due – and this one is open and free to the public! Headlining the aerial performances will be the Navy’s Blue Angels. The excitement doesn’t stop there as you can see vintage aircraft from World War II as well as Soviet MIG-15s put on a demonstration of their capabilities. Special acknowledgments will be made to the Tuskegee Airmen with a flyby of “Redtails” – a P-51 similar to those that the original Tuskegee airmen flew in World War II as well as an F35 from the 187FW “Redtails” at Dannelly field. Civilian aircraft and experimentals will also perform – with aerobatics and maneuvers that you’ll call “awesome”! Helicopter demonstration and a parachute teams round out the airborne events. On the ground, you’ll see (and can even get close to and even inside of) a huge variety of our nation’s frontline aircraft as well as heritage airframes.

Another headliner you should plan to see is the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Expo. It hosts a dizzying variety of displays and hands on experiences including rocketry, robotics, educational booths, flight simulators, virtual reality experiences, STEM experiments, and speakers from government, defense, industry, education, and entertainment. Over 21 STEM-oriented organizations will be on hand. Spoiler alert, one of them is from the Talladega Speedway!
If you happen by the Maxwell area on Friday, 5 April and see lot of activity, don’t fret, you haven’t missed a thing. On Friday, the Maxwell Air Show is having a STEM Open House from 8:00 Am to 5:00 PM. Planners anticipate over 5,000 River Region High School students will attend! The River Region’s own AFA-102 Chapter will help support all of these STEM displays and events. AFA-102 Chapter members will help attendees around the various displays and demonstrations.

If you are interested in helping the Chapter, join us by calling/texting Scott Key, AFA Chapter 102 President at 334-7176476. And a day of fun would not be complete without – food! When you get hungry (we all do at airshows), food/drink vendors will be plentiful. As a reminder, a clear bag policy will get you through the base access points. Gates open at 8:00 AM with the daily opening ceremony starting about 10:30 AM. Aerial demonstrations begin about 11:00 AM and the displays will be open until 4:30 PM. For more details visit the Maxwell Air Force Base Beyond the Horizon Air and Space show website.

Looking forward to seeing you in April!
